Actionstep Appoints Experienced SaaS Legaltech Product Leader Valerie Connell to Oversee Product Development

Connell’s addition further drives enhancements to Actionstep’s comprehensive practice management platform for midsized law firms.



Denver, Colorado – March 1, 2023 – Actionstep, a leading provider of cloud-based legal practice management software supporting thousands of law firms globally, has announced the appointment of Valerie Connell as Senior Vice President, Product. Valerie previously led the high-growth product team at NetDocuments, a leading cloud-based document and records management platform. The addition of Valerie to Actionstep’s leadership team follows several other recent hires with deep legal practice management software experience - reflecting Actionstep’s continued commitment to and investment in delivering best-in-class technology to law firms.

Valerie brings more than 20 years of proven legaltech and SaaS product leadership and innovation to her role at Actionstep, which provides an adaptable practice management software platform for midsize law firms in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.

As Senior Vice President, Product, Valerie will focus on further honing and expanding Actionstep’s product offering for midsize law firms and scaling its world-class product and engineering foundation to meet this mission.

In addition to her executive product role at NetDocuments, Valerie previously led high-growth product teams at LexisNexis, a global provider of legal, regulatory, and business information and analytics and other cloud-based and edtech companies as SVP, Product, at Carrus; VP, Product Management, at BookIt.com; and VP, Product and Market Strategy, at the Waterford Institute.

Valerie is an active mentor to the product and design community and an advocate for women in technology. She is the co-founder and Executive Board Member of Product Hive, a non-profit organization dedicated to education, mentoring, and networking for product management and design professionals, with a membership of over 8,000 in chapters throughout the U.S. Valerie is also a founding member of Tech Ladies, a global community of over 150,000 members dedicated to helping women grow, network, and expand their careers. She continues to be actively involved in organizations that promote a diverse workforce.

Actionstep has tens of thousands of subscribers globally with 40% of these in the U.S. The company plans to accelerate the expansion of its boutique and mixed-practice law firm customer base nationally. Since September 2020, when Actionstep announced an investment from growth-oriented private equity firm, Serent Capital, the company has nearly doubled its headcount and invested in numerous key product enhancements, including a comprehensive, built-in payments solution launched in late 2022. Most recent hires have focused on the U.S. across the product, marketing, sales, customer success, and partnership teams. Actionstep, with its U.S. headquarters in Denver, CO, recently expanded to larger office space to accommodate recent and further planned growth.

The announcement of Valerie as Senior Vice President, Product, follows Actionstep’s CEO, Early Stephens joining in July 2022 and Christian McLaughlin in April 2022 as Actionstep’s Director of Global Partnerships, who previously held similar roles at Litify and Filevine.
